Today we are kicking off our Senior Spotlight campaign to honor Bennett Day School’s first graduating class – a group of earnest and courageous students who took a chance on a high school that didn’t even exist yet.

Throughout the last four years, these students have proven time and time again that young people are innately capable, curious, and competent, especially when they feel seen and heard at school.

Stay tuned between now and the end of the school year as we give each senior an opportunity to share memories, advice, and future plans!

Senior Spotlight: Jorge

Why did you choose/decide to go to Bennett Day School?

Being able to jump in on the ground level was too good of an opportunity to pass up! All the other schools I considered had centuries of tradition and alumni. At Bennett, everything was an exciting experiment filled with many mistakes and growth.

During my interview, Mr. Moran’s vision left me with chills. He spoke of a school with “the student’s names on the walls for centuries” and he had me hooked.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I will be attending Northwestern University to study journalism and political science! I’m hoping to keep doing my reporting while in college and become the best journalist I can be. My dream career involves working in some government capacity, helping to influence policy and meaningful action.

What advice would you give rising seniors?

It’s all going to work out. It seems stressful (and it is) but the work you’re doing now will lay the foundation to thrive in the future! You are all capable of amazing things and I can only imagine where the future will take you.

What’s your favorite project-based learning (PBL) memory?

The first trimester of Junior year, my partner and I (accidentally) created super-bacteria. We set out to induce a point mutation on the genome of E. coli, forcing the bacteria to become osmotic resistant. By the end, we also accidentally gave it anti-biotic resistance, potentially creating a biohazard that needed to be disposed of immediately. We proposed the project, managed our budget, and carefully curated all the supplies and we were left with omnipotent bacteria — it was scary as much as it was thrilling!

What are you excited for after Bennett?

Taking a break! Bennett has allowed me to integrate extracurricular activities into my education but at times, that has meant I’ve taken on more than I can handle. Before Northwestern, I’m excited to enjoy my summer break.
